Between Gansen-ji Temple and Joruri-ji Temples, remain several stone Buddhist statues and reliefs, created by hermit monks influenced by Nanto Rokushu Buddhism. Take a walk along the trail dotted with the stone Buddhas, and pass by village stores hanging seasonal produce outside.
●Joruri-ji Temple
Its main hall, itself a national treasure, houses nine statues of sitting Amida Nyorai (National treasures), and statues of the four heavenly kings (National treasures).
Repairs of the nine Amida Nyorai sitting statues, begun in 2018, will take five years to complete.
●Gansen-ji temple
Located in the Tono area near the border with Nara Prefecture, this temple delights visitors with its stunning natural setting. Surrounded by verdant green for much of the year, fiery red leaves in the fall, and a forest of blooming hydrangeas at the start of the summer.
●Tono Buddha statues / Miroku no Tsuji
Strongly influenced by Nanto Rokushu Buddhism, hermit monks carved a series of Buddhist reliefs into rocks during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). These stone Buddhas now mark the pilgrim trail through the Tono-no-sato area.( Guide tour link)
